2001 Celebration

Beginning at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30, 2000 members of the Arlington Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration began the process of sorting through nearly 300 pieces of artwork to select the design that best illustrates the sharing of Dr. King’s dream.

About the “Sharing the Dream” Essay Contest

The “Sharing the Dream” Essay Contest is open to all high school seniors who attend Arlington schools or reside in the city limits of Arlington. The essay theme is “Sharing the Dream: Where do we go from here?” Scholarships to help defray the cost of college tuition and books will be awarded to the top three essay writers. The first place winner will receive $1,000, the second place winner will receive $750 and the third place winner will receive $500. The entry deadline for the Essay Contest is 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, 2000. The winning essay will be read by the student writer at the Sharing the Dream banquet in January.

About the “Sharing the Dream” Art Contest

The “Sharing the Dream” Art Contest is open to all junior and senior high school students within the Arlington city limits. The winning art design will appear on Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration materials, including T-shirts, programs and posters that promote the four-day celebration. United States Savings Bonds will be awarded to the top three winners of the Art Contest. The first place winner will receive $1,000, the second place winner will receive $750 and the third place winner will receive $500. The entry deadline for the Art Contest is 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, 2000.

Announcement of Winners/Contest Information

Essay and Art Contest winners will be announced Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2000. Winners will be recognized during the Sharing the Dream Banquet on January 20 , 2001 and throughout the four-day celebration weekend. Dr. Robert Bing chairs this year’s “Sharing the Dream” Essay Contest. AISD Art Coordinator Ron Durham chairs the “Sharing the Dream” Art Contest.
