The Arlington MLK Celebration Committee announces its second annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Spirit of Service Essay Competition for college students enrolled in Tarrant County College-Southeast and/or UT Arlington. A $1,000 Scholarship will be awarded in the name of the winning writer to their respective school.

Rules

  • Must be a sophomore, junior, or senior enrolled at UT Arlington or Tarrant County Southeast Campus with a full-time status of 12 semester hours or more.
  • Must be able to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to community service by providing a brief statement of volunteer achievements.
  • Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Must be able demonstrate financial need (FAFSA score for 2015)
  • Essays must be original, typed, double-spaced and not exceed 1,500 words.
  • Must include recommendation letters from two faculty members or nonprofit community organizations.

How To Enter

SUBMISSION DEADLINE IS 4 PM WEDNESDAY, DEC. 2, 2015

Hand-cancellation of postage required, if mailed.

Interested applicants must also complete and submit an application form, which can be picked up at the UT Arlington, Dean of History Office, at Room 202, University Hall or Tarrant County College Southeast Campus Activities Office.

Winners will be formally recognized at the MLK Advancing the Dream Awards Banquet on Friday, Jan. 15, 2016 and the MLK Day of Service on the Dr. King Holiday. This scholarship essay competition is sponsored by the Arlington MLK Celebration Committee, University of Texas in Arlington, Arlington Independent School District, City of Arlington, TX, Tarrant County College and Arlington Ministerial Alliance.
