Let the Judging Begin – Process is Underway to Find Winning MLK Art and Essays

Judges have started the selection process for the Arlington Martin Luther King Jr. “Sharing the Dream” student art and essay competitions.

MLK Committee members gathered Monday at the AISD Mac Bernd Professional Development Center to evaluate nearly 550 pieces of artwork submitted by Arlington area students in grades seven through twelve. Judges were looking for artwork that best represent this year’s theme: “Speak Out, Be Heard, Change the World.” Artwork was scored on originality, overall artistic impression and design. Judges selected the Top 15, which will be presented to the entire MLK Celebration Planning Committee on Nov. 19. The top three winners will each receive $1,000, $750 and $500 awards. The winning design will appear on T-shirts and posters that promote the Arlington MLK Celebration.

Art Contest Chair Linh Nguyen said judges were impressed by the quality and workmanship of submissions.

This week, judges will also begin reading essays  submitted by Arlington students. The essay competition closed Nov. 2 and was open to high school seniors. The top three winners will receive scholarships to help defray the cost of college tuition and books. Winners will be announced later this month.
