Expect Smoother Commutes, Collins Now Open

It looks like a best-case scenario for your Thursday morning commute.  After a four-day closure,  Collins Street is now open.  The Union Pacific Rail Renewal project to replace aging track and ties along a 13-mile stretch in Arlington has consistently moved ahead of schedule.  Cooper, Center, Mesquite, and Collins are all open for traffic, a day earlier than expected.

“UP has been listening to the City of Arlington’s concerns since day one and really bent over backwards to make sure rail crossings opened ahead of schedule,” said Keith Melton, Director of Public Works and Transportation. ” We really appreciate what UP did to help minimize the number of crossings closed simultaneously during this project. Rush hour commutes should be a lot smoother.”

After further  road work, Davis Drive is expected to re-open Wednesday evening.  The final crossings impacted by the project remain on schedule, with Stadium Drive East slated to open Thursday, January 24 and Great Southwest Parkway scheduled to open February 3.

  1. Why do you guys keep posting that Stadium drive is on or ahead of schedule? Your latest update says “The final crossings impacted by the project remain on schedule, with Stadium Drive East slated to open Thursday, January 24 and Great Southwest Parkway scheduled to open February 3.” However, the published schedule was to have Stadium back yesterday (“Stadium Drive East CLOSED January 19-23 (Sat.-Wed.)”), and it’s still closed this morning, 1/24/13. When is is really coming back? Will it be open for the afternoon commute? I get that things don’t always go as scheduled, but at least you could communicate reality on your updates so that we feel like we can believe what you’re posting; when you post that something is on schedule when the schedule shows it’s not, it makes a person wonder what schedule you’re operating from.

    1. Hi Mark,
The City of Arlington is distributing information as it is received from Union Pacific. Most of the work on this rail renewal has been on schedule or ahead of time. The crossing at Stadium was slated to occur earlier, however due to the nature of the work all times are approximate. It is now open. Great Southwest Parkway is scheduled to open Friday. Our apologies for any confusion. Thanks for your input.
