On the Clock: Putting Technology to Work with the City’s Data Collection Van

On the Clock is a show that gives residents an inside look at the hard work city employees do every day to make Arlington a better community to live, learn, work and play.

The episode, hosted by City Manager Trey Yelverton, gives residents a behind-the-scenes look at how the Public Works & Transportation team is putting technology to work with the City’s data collection van to measure street conditions.

Once a year, a pavement evaluation device scans roughly one third of Arlington’s roads, using lasers and photography to record digital images of pavement surfaces and degrees of roughness and distress.

The City’s policy is to reconstruct streets in the worst condition first to achieve a more balanced street network over time. The goal is to make timely, cost-effective repairs when needed.

The data collection van aligns with the Arlington City Council priority to Put Technology to Work. It’s also an example of the City Council’s priority to Enhance Regional Mobility.
