MyArlingtonTV Tours the New George W. Hawkes Downtown Library: Second Floor

Director of Libraries Yoko Matsumoto is taking residents and visitors on a tour of the new George W. Hawkes Downtown Library in a three-part series for MyArlingtonTV showcasing each floor.

The Downtown Library, located at 100 S. Center St. just north of Arlington City Hall, opened to the public on June 16, 2018. The building was designed with public input to provide access, knowledge, and resources through cutting-edge technology, extensive print and digital collections and dynamic and enriching programming for the entire community.

The Downtown Library’s second floor is dedicated to modern learning, creativity and innovation. With technology and spaces for teens and adults, students and creators, the second floor is a busy hub of activity.

The second floor holds the bulk of the Downtown Library’s computers and other technology for adults. Computers with Internet access, the Microsoft Office suite, and CD/DVD capabilities will be available for adults to use for free with their library card. Non-residents can purchase a guest pass for computer access.  A print and copy station, one of three throughout the building, will release printing done from library computers or through the library’s mobile printing service.

Teens will also find a space just for them on the second floor. Play video games, meet after school in study rooms, browse Young Adult books, or just hang out in quirky, comfortable furniture. Teens can even check out a laptop or other device to use within the library. A teen Help Desk in this section is ready for questions about projects, technology, books, events and more.

Stay tuned for next week’s episode touring the third floor of the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library! Regular hours of operation are Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Downtown Library will be open on Sundays all year long.
