More than 100 MISD Student-Athletes Participate in National Signing Day

Mansfield ISD’s National Signing Day event celebrated the 109 student-athletes who earned scholarships and committed to continue playing their sport at the collegiate level.

National Signing Day is held on the first Wednesday in February. It has traditionally been the first day that a high school senior can sign a binding letter of intent to play at a school that is part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Student-athletes from Lake Ridge High School, Legacy High School, Mansfield High School, Summit High School and Timberview High School gathered at the MISD Center for the Performing Arts on Feb. 6 for the ceremony.

Families, friends and coaches were also in attendance as the young athletes publicly displayed which college they will be attending after graduation.

Athletics Director Philip O’Neal said that his hope is for all the signees to find and follow their passion in college.

“We have the capacity and ability to teach our student-athletes character traits that are going to help them far beyond their high school career,” said O’Neal. “They’ll be able to use those traits and apply them to their future goals, even if it has nothing to do with sports.”

Early signing days were held in November and December. More letters of intent will be signed in April.
