Winners of the 2019 Animal Essay Contest are bright shining stars in The American Dream City.

It was a big day at Arlington Animal Services Center on Saturday, March 9, when the students read their winning essays publicly, received a shelter tour, and went next door to visit the Southeast Branch Library to receive training on how to use their brand new Kindle Fire HD, compliments of Spring Creek Barbeque and the City.

Reading of the essays roused vigorous applause – and misty eyes at times – by those in attendance. Topics ranged from the sixth-graders insightful concepts of how animal shelters will be different in 2060 than they are today, to a heart-warming essay presented by Meadow Borougerdi, the first-place, third-grade winner from The Montessori Academy of Arlington about her love of cardinals, and their special significance for her family.

Spending time with these students, it becomes quickly evident that they have a special compassion for animals, and learning.

A new tradition was started with this year’s essay winners. As they arrived at the Southeast Branch Library, they were asked to select a book and to autograph in their honor.

These amazing students have had a busy agenda since the surprise visits to their schools on Feb. 1, 2019, when they were announced as winners in this year’s competition.

On Feb. 16, they visited EECU to each open a savings account with a $100 deposit, awarded by EECU, Spring Creek Barbecue, and the City of Arlington.

First place winners are invited, along with their teachers, to film an interview in the Office of Communication at City Hall on Monday, March 18. Don’t miss learning about these wonderful youth and hearing their exceptional essays. Be watching for it to broadcast soon on MyArlingtonTV.

This year, something else new was added to the itinerary for these young achievers. On March 23, UT Arlington will provide contest winners a private tour of the campus.

The highly anticipated recognition occurs at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, when these accomplished students will be recognized at City Hall with a reception and receipt of their awards by the mayor.
