Arlington Parks and Recreation Department Continues to Win Awards

The mission of the City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department (APRD) is to provide quality facilities and services that are responsive to a diverse community and sustained with a focus on partnerships, innovation and environmental leadership. With more than 4,700 acres of parks, recreation facilities, open spaces, natural trails, and playgrounds, there are many opportunities for open play and exercise. Four divisions manage these resources, including Park Operations and Planning, Community Programs, Enterprise Programs and Business Services. Clarence Foster Park Gets a Facelift

The City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department recently began a renovation project at Clarence Foster Park in west Arlington. The 15-acre park, named after the former Arlington City Council member and Water Commissioner when Lake Arlington was built, is beginning to look better than ever. The project, slated to be completed in August 2014, will include a new 8-foot-wide, concrete “Hike & Bike Trail” that circles the park, with 5 new benches along the route. Lacrosse Explosion in Arlington

Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing team sports in the country, and the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department has partnered with Dallas-based Bridge Lacrosse to bring this amazing sport to Arlington. Thanks to a series of clinics held this week at Arlington Recreation centers, more than 100 boys and girls were introduced to the sport by Bridge Lacrosse coaches and players. Bridge Lacrosse is a small sports-based youth development nonprofit serving the urban communities of North Texas.


O.S. Gray Pecan Tree Roundup Underway

The Friends of the O.S. Gary Natural Area in Arlington are conducting a round-up of pecan trees associated with the former O.S. Gray Nursery, which operated from 1948 to 1978 on Division Street in Arlington. Oscar Gray Sr. was known as the “Johnny Appleseed” of pecans because of his significance in the cultivation of pecan trees in Texas and the Nation. The City of Arlington recognized his efforts by naming the natural area, located on acreage that once was the location of his tree nursery, after him. Arlington’s Field of Dreams Expands

A lack of members hasn’t been a problem for the Arlington Southwest Little League, which, at almost 2,000 annual players, ranks among the largest Little Leagues in the world. But the sports complex where the young athletes play lacks adequate parking and field space. Little League organizers long have pleaded their case for more room. By next spring, their dream will become reality. Parks and Recreation Department Honored

Gold Medal Finalist Arlington Parks and Recreation has been selected as a finalist for the 2014 National Gold Medal Awards for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management program. The award is handed out by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA) and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). The Gold Medal Award honors communities throughout the United States that demonstrate excellence in long-range planning, resource management, and agency recognition.
