Store clerk fatally shot man suspected of attempting to shoplift

The Arlington Police Department is investigating the fatal shooting of a man who was apparently attempting to shoplift at a tobacco store this morning. The store clerk who shot the man has been arrested. Johnathan Brian Lambert, 28, of River Oaks, is in the Arlington City Jail and is facing a charge of Murder. Bail has not yet been set. The mugshot for Lambert (DOB 11/26/1985) is not yet available.

Officers were dispatched to a shooting call at a store in the 5900 block of S. Cooper Street at about 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, November 26, 2013. Officers arrived and discovered two men holding two other men at gunpoint. Talking to witnesses it appears that a customer in the store had attempted to steal an item from the tobacco store. Lambert fired his weapon as the shoplifter attempted to flee the store, hitting him. A friend of the shoplifter was in the parking lot at the time of the shooting and was also confronted by the armed store clerks. The injured man was driven by ambulance to Medical Center of Arlington where he died. His name will be released by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner once he has been officially identified and next of kin has been notified.

Early into the investigation it appears that the clerks were the only individuals with guns and only Lambert fired his weapon. Detectives believe that the clerk fired his weapon at the shoplifter with no direct threat to the clerk, other employees or customers. The case remains under investigation as detectives continue to collect evidence and speak with witnesses.
