Detectives Investigating Shooting near Stadium

On Sunday, October 11, 2015, the Arlington Police Department was in the process of assisting stadium officials with clearing parking lots at the conclusion of a football game. During a typical event, tailgaters and patrons have to clear the lots within two hours of the conclusion of a game. The game ended at approximately 6:25 p.m. There were about a dozen officers riding with stadium officials attempting to clear parking lots including the parking lot near Collins Street and Randol Mill Road. One officer was approached by a citizen at approximately 8:20 p.m. and informed that there was a fight in the northwest corner of the lot.

As the officer notified dispatch services of the fight and began to arrive near the location of the disturbance, the officer heard a single gunshot. About a minute later, APD received a 911 call from a citizen at 8:21 p.m. indicating there was a shooting at the parking lot. Additional officers arrived and contained the scene, identified the shooter and began administering first aid to a shooting victim.

Investigators believe that there were two fights that broke out within minutes of each other which resulted in one person being shot. During the first fight, the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Marvin Rodriguez of Dallas, walked up to a 27-year-old man and pointed a gun at him. The first victim walked away from that encounter after having the gun pointed at him.

During the second fight, which occurred one minute later, a 43-year-old man attempted to break up the fight and was knocked to the ground. The suspect walked up to this second victim while he was trying to get up from the ground and shot him once in the neck. The shooting occurred in a grassy easement area between the sidewalk and a retaining wall for the parking lot. The suspect then attempted to flee by getting into a vehicle but was arrested by officers. Officers recovered a firearm.

The victim who was shot was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. Investigators continue to conduct interviews with witnesses and are asking anyone who may have captured video of either of these fights to contact Detective Stellato at 817-459-5782.

The suspect is currently in the Arlington Municipal Jail and charged with:

  • Aggravated Assault – Causing Serious Bodily Injury – $100,000 Bond
  • Aggravated Assault – Deadly Weapon – $100,00 Bond

APD has a robust security and traffic management plan with all of our venues in the Entertainment District. Investigators believe that this was an isolated incident.
