The United States Department of Justice and the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) has selected the Arlington Police Department to be one of fifteen law enforcement agencies nationwide that will serve as an exemplary implementation model for the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing. Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams, City Manager Trey Yelverton, along with Police Chief Will Johnson attended a ceremony at the White House today as these announcements were made. Chief Johnson provided a speech to attendees on building public trust.“Trust is not built during a crisis, it is not built quickly, and no matter how much trust you build it can erode over time. Department of Justice Announces Initiative to Advance 21st Century Policing
Implementation of Task Force recommendations enters new phaseWASHINGTON, D.C. – The Department of Justice and the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) today announced a new initiative to provide support to the nation’s 18,000 law enforcement agencies in advancing the recommendations of the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing. The Advancing 21st Century Policing Initiative, launched with COPS Office grantee partners CNA and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), will support a selected cohort of 15 jurisdictions by providing hands-on assessments and technical assistance as they continue implementation efforts. The work done by this cohort will produce guiding materials to advance policing practices for agencies across the country.The initiative’s launch coincides with the anniversary of the release of the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing’s final report. The COPS Office also released today its one-year progress report on the implementation of Task Force recommendations. The progress report provides highlights of how jurisdictions across the country have implemented the report’s recommendations and action items.
