Arlington Assisting in Death Investigation

The Arlington Police Department responded to a pursuit that entered Arlington around 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 25, 2017. Responding officers arrived at the conclusion of the pursuit involving a recreational vehicle. The vehicle was fully engulfed in fire and officers located a deceased man at the scene.

Arlington PD has been advised that Hunt County Sheriff’s deputies received a 9-1-1 text around 2:30 a.m. from a woman who reported that she was inside the RV and had been shot. She further texted that she had been kidnapped and that her two children were inside the RV as well. The woman reported that she was near FM 513 and IH 30 in Hunt County. Approximately 20 minutes later, an officer from Caddo Mills Police Department spotted the RV near FM 1903 and IH 30 in Hunt County. The officer reported that he saw the woman jump from the RV while it was in motion at a high speed near FM 35 and IH 30. The woman was transported to Baylor Hospital in Dallas County for treatment consistent with gunshot wounds. Her condition is unknown.

The pursuit continued across several jurisdictions with agencies from Rockwall PD, Rockwall County SO, Rowlett PD, Dallas PD, Dallas County SO, and Grand Prairie PD assisting during the chase. Spike strips were deployed by several jurisdictions in an attempt to disable the vehicle and bring peaceful resolution to this incident.

At around 4:30 a.m., the pursuit entered Arlington when the vehicle became disabled in the westbound lanes of IH 30 at Cooper Street. Officers from Caddo Mills and a deputy from Hunt County Sheriff’s Office approached the RV when they saw the man driving, open the door and let two small kids out. The children are described as a toddler and a 3-year old. Officers grabbed the children to bring them to safety when they heard what they described as a single gunshot. The vehicle was smoking and caught fire.

The children have been transported to Arlington Memorial Hospital to get checked out. Hunt County Sheriff’s Office and Rockwall PD will lead the shooting of the woman investigation. Arlington PD will conduct the death investigation of the man and subsequent disabling of the vehicle on the highway. No shots were fired by officers. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death and release the identity of the deceased once next of kin notification occurs.

Westbound IH 30 remains closed until approximately 9 a.m. while the traffic investigation concludes and the RV along with debris is cleaned up from the roadway.
