Cultural Celebration Involves Health and Safety

Colorful art, music and cuisine are important parts of the Asian culture and this year’s annual festivities also involved public safety.

The Asian Egg Roll Festival took center stage at the Ben Thanh Plaza in the East Police District last month. In addition to entertainment and food, the weekend also included lots of vendors and a health fair. The Arlington Police Department hosted a safety fair.

Crime Prevention Officer Natalia Aumedes said officers shared information about various APD programs and services, including Doan Ket, an outreach program developed especially for the Vietnamese community.  There were presentations on robbery prevention and motor vehicle burglaries. Volunteers from the Arlington Hispanic Citizens  Police Academy also participated.

“Asian culture is colorful and very exciting,” said Officer Aumedes. “Festivals like this highlight the rich traditions and practices that have been passed down. The Arlington Police Department was excited about being involved.”

The Asian Egg Roll Festival was made possible by David Dang, the owner of Ben Thanh Plaza, the Arlington Asian Chamber of Commerce and a host of community contributions. Participants also collected close to $5,000, which will be donated to Hurricane Harvey Relief efforts.
