Tri-Schools Road Project

The Tri-Schools Road Project is dedicated to improving street and sidewalk needs in the area of three Mansfield ISD schools: Carol Holt Elementary School, Cross Timbers Intermediate School and T.A Howard Middle School. Calender Road, Ledbetter Road and Russell Road are narrow, two-lane asphalt roadways with ditch drainage and limited sidewalks, making the area unsafe for children who walk to school. Residents in the area petitioned for the project, which has been developed with community input, including five City of Arlington sponsored neighborhood meetings on 05/29/2014, 04/08/2013, 09/17/2012, 05/21/2012 and 09/20/2011.

The Tri-Schools Road Project construction, a multi-million dollar project began construction on June 9, 2014.

Project Improvements

The following roads will be reconstructed as reinforced concrete streets with curbs and sidewalks: Ledbetter between Curry Road & Russell Road, Russell between Ledbetter Road and Calender Road, and Calender between Monthaven Road to Harris Road. The project includes the replacement of water lines on these streets. Sanitary sewer mains are also being replaced and installed to provide city sanitary sewer services to all properties abutting these streets. Underground storm drainage and street lighting will also be installed as part of the improvements.

In order to alleviate this congestion, improvements will widen portions of the roadways and install design improvements to key intersections that will enhance traffic flow during peak hours. Additional design considerations include enhanced safety features, such as expanded sidewalks, crosswalks and designated lanes for bicyclists on Calender Lane.

Improvements include the installation of a traffic roundabout at the intersection of Russell Road and Calender Road, and at the intersection of Calender Road and Harris Road.

Curry Road, between Winthorp Drive and Blake Drive, will be reconstructed at a lower elevation to remove a limited site distance condition at Ledbetter Road.

Storm Drainage improvements and sanitary sewer improvements are also included on Blue Forest Drive between Ledbetter Road and Forest Mist Drive. Asphalt street resurfacing of Blue Forest Road between Harris Road and Ledbetter Road is also included in the project.

Finally, a sanitary sewer line upgrade on Truver Lane is also included in the project. The impacted pavement surface on Truver Lane will be restored as part of the project.

Modern Roundabouts – A Safer Choice Video (FHWA)

The Harris Road extension from Calender Road to the west is scheduled to begin later this month. Calender Road shall remain open to traffic during this process. The work includes extending a 42-inch water line the entire length of Harris Road between Ledbetter Road and Calender Road. This additional work will not extend the time provided to complete the original scope of work. The contractor will continue to work on the original project until all bid items are substantially complete.
