To protect publicly owned treatment works and sanitary sewer systems, the EPA has set pretreatment standards to reduce dental office discharges of the mercury in amalgam used for fillings.
The effective date of the rule was June 14, 2017.
New dental offices, or “new sources,” must comply with the new regulations by the effective date. Existing offices, or “existing sources,” have until July 2020 to meet the new standards. Both types of offices must submit a one-time compliance report to their local authority.
